June to August is the best time to visit Klaipėda. Summer days reach 17-22°C, warm enough for the Baltic beaches on the Curonian Spit, and the city's biggest event, the Sea Festival, fills the port with tall ships in late July. May and September are quieter and cheaper with mild, walkable weather. Winter is dark, windy and often below freezing, which suits the museums but not the coast.

Palanga Airport (PLQ) is 31 km north of Klaipėda and the transfer takes about 35 minutes. Scheduled buses run between the airport and Klaipėda bus station for a few euros, timed loosely around flight arrivals. Taxis and ride-hailing apps cost roughly €30-40. If you land at Kaunas (KUN) or Vilnius (VNO) instead, allow 3 to 4.5 hours by intercity bus or car.

Walk — the Old Town, port and Danė riverside are all within about 20 minutes of each other. City buses cover the wider city and outer beaches at Giruliai and Melnragė, paid for with a rechargeable e-ticket card sold at kiosks. Passenger ferries to Smiltynė leave from the Old Castle terminal. A car is only worth hiring if you plan to explore the coast beyond Palanga and Nida.

Two to three days covers Klaipėda comfortably. One day handles the Old Town, Theatre Square, the castle site and the amber and clock museums. A second is best spent crossing to Smiltynė for the Lithuanian Sea Museum and the dunes. Add a third day to reach Nida on the Curonian Spit, and a fourth if you want Palanga or the Nemunas Delta as well.

Yes, Klaipėda is a safe city for visitors. Lithuania has low rates of violent crime and the Old Town and seafront are comfortable to walk after dark. Normal caution applies around the port and bar streets on weekend nights, and petty theft is uncommon but possible in summer crowds. The bigger practical risk is the sea itself — Baltic currents can be strong, so swim at flagged beaches.

Take the passenger ferry from the Old Castle terminal to Smiltynė — the crossing takes under 10 minutes and boats run frequently through the day. From Smiltynė, buses continue south along the spit to Juodkrantė and Nida, about an hour to the far end. Cars use the separate New ferry terminal south of the centre, and there is an additional environmental charge to drive into Neringa municipality.

Nida on the Curonian Spit is the standout — about 90 minutes each way by ferry and bus, with the Parnidis dune and Thomas Mann's summer house. Palanga, 30 km north, offers the Amber Museum and botanical park. Further afield, the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai is roughly two hours by car, the Nemunas Delta Regional Park is excellent for birdwatching, and Kretinga has a restored manor and winter garden.
