The best time to visit Cancún is from December to April, during the dry season. Skies are sunny, humidity is low and the sea is calm and clear. This is peak season, so expect higher prices and busier beaches, especially around the winter holidays and spring break. May and November are pleasant shoulder months with fewer crowds, while the June–October rainy season brings heat, humidity and a small hurricane risk but the lowest prices.
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is about 20 km south of the Hotel Zone, roughly a 20–30 minute drive. Pre-booked private transfers and the official ADO buses to downtown are the most reliable options, and many resorts arrange airport pickups. Authorised taxis are available outside the terminals; agree the fare or use a set-rate voucher before setting off, and avoid unofficial drivers who approach you inside the arrivals hall.
Getting around Cancún is easy without a car. Frequent R1 and R2 public buses run the length of the Hotel Zone and into downtown for a low flat fare, paid in cash to the driver. Taxis are plentiful but unmetered, so agree the price before you get in. For day trips, ADO long-distance buses and colectivo shared vans connect Cancún with Playa del Carmen, Tulum and other spots along the coast.
Three to four days is enough to enjoy Cancún's beaches, nightlife and a day trip or two. Add a couple more days if you want to explore further afield — visiting Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, or diving and snorkelling the reefs. Many travellers use Cancún as a base for a week-long Yucatán and Riviera Maya trip.
Cancún is generally safe for tourists, particularly in the Hotel Zone and main downtown areas, which are heavily geared towards visitors. Use normal precautions: keep valuables secure, use authorised taxis or transfers, and be cautious with alcohol and street deals. Swim only when conditions allow and heed beach flag warnings, as currents can be strong.
Cancún is an excellent base for day trips. Popular options include the Maya ruins of Chichén Itzá and Tulum, the cenotes and eco-parks of the Riviera Maya such as Xcaret and Xel-Há, and the islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel for beaches, snorkelling and diving. Most can be booked as guided tours or reached independently by ferry and bus.
