Cancun in October: Weather, Hurricane Season and Low Prices
Marketing Manager
Cancun in October is a value play. Hotel rates sit roughly 30 to 45% below the December peak, crowds are among the thinnest of the year, and the Caribbean stays at 28 to 29°C. The catch is the tail end of hurricane season and a sargassum season that is improving but not finished, so this guide picks 5 trips that work around both and that our main Cancun guide does not cover: reef-protected Puerto Morelos, the sea turtles of Akumal, the clear west coast of Cozumel, the clifftop ruins of Tulum, and Ek Balam with the colonial town of Valladolid. Each entry includes the exact address, how to get there from Cancun and a Pro Tip.
On Cancun weather in October: highs run from 31 to 33°C early in the month to 29 to 31°C by late October, with nights around 22 to 24°C and humidity easing as the month goes on. Early October still brings afternoon storms typical of the rainy season, while the last ten days are noticeably drier. Cancun hurricane season runs until 30 November, with risk moderate in the first ten days of October and low by the last ten.
Is October a good time to visit Cancun? For flexible travellers, yes, especially from 15 October. Book refundable rates and travel insurance for early-month trips, check the National Hurricane Center five-day outlook before you fly, and use the entries below as backups if the Hotel Zone beaches catch seaweed. ADO buses, colectivos and ferries cover most routes, though Ek Balam is easiest by rental car.
1Puerto Morelos - The Reef Beach That Stays Clear

Puerto Morelos is a low-rise fishing town halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and in October it is one of the safest bets for clear water. A coral reef runs parallel to the shore less than 1 km out, protected as Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, and it breaks up the waves and catches much of the sargassum that can wash onto the Hotel Zone's open beaches.
Licensed boat operators by the town pier run snorkelling trips to the reef, where the water is shallow and calm and parrotfish, rays and sea turtles are common sightings; every snorkeller wears a life vest and pays the national park fee. On land, the leaning lighthouse, knocked off balance by Hurricane Beulah in 1967, is the town's best-known landmark, and the main square is lined with seafood restaurants serving ceviche and whole fried fish.
Pro Tip: Book a morning snorkelling trip beside the pier, when the sea is calmest, and bring pesos in cash for the reef fee. Wear a rash vest or reef-safe sunscreen, as guides increasingly ask for it.
2Akumal - Swim With Green Sea Turtles

Akumal Bay, whose Maya name means place of the turtles, is home to resident green sea turtles that graze on seagrass a short swim from the beach. They live here year-round, so an October visit is not tied to the nesting season, and the bay's shallow, sheltered water makes it one of the easiest places on the Riviera Maya to see turtles in the wild.
To protect the animals, swimming in the turtle area is managed through official guides, marked zones and small groups, and access should be bought from the official kiosk on the beach rather than from touts on the highway. Early October is also the end of the loggerhead and green turtle nesting season on Quintana Roo beaches, so early risers may still see late hatchlings heading for the sea.
Pro Tip: Arrive by 09:00, before tour buses from Cancun reach the bay, and keep at least 3 m from the turtles; touching or chasing them is prohibited.
3Cozumel's West Coast - Clear Water Beyond the Sargassum

Cozumel is Mexico's largest Caribbean island, and its west coast faces the mainland, sheltered from the open-sea swell that carries sargassum. That makes it a reliable October escape when Cancun's beaches are patchy. The reefs of Cozumel Reefs National Park, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, have some of the clearest water in the Caribbean, with visibility often above 30 m.
Divers come for drift dives along walls such as Palancar and Columbia, while snorkellers can swim from beach clubs south of San Miguel or join boat trips to shallow reefs. October is low season, so dive packages are discounted. Rent a scooter or car to loop the undeveloped east coast, where the surf is too strong for swimming but the empty beaches are worth the drive.
Pro Tip: Take an early ferry and check the cruise ship schedule online, choosing a day with fewer ships in port. The crossing can be rough after storms, so pack seasickness tablets.
4Tulum Archaeological Zone - Maya Ruins Above the Caribbean

Tulum is the only major Maya city built on a cliff above the sea. The walled site, which flourished between the 13th and 15th centuries as a trading port, overlooks a small beach and turquoise water, and its main temple, El Castillo, stands at the edge of the bluff. It is compact enough to see in about 90 minutes, which suits the October heat.
October's thinner crowds make a real difference here, as the site can be overwhelmed by tour groups in winter. The ruins now sit within Jaguar National Park, which charges its own entry fee on top of the INAH archaeological ticket, so check current prices before you go. Afterwards, the beaches and restaurants of Tulum make it easy to stay for the afternoon.
Pro Tip: Arrive for the 08:00 opening, before the heat and the tour buses, and bring swimwear: the small beach below El Castillo opens to visitors when sea conditions allow.
5Ek Balam and Valladolid - A Climbable Pyramid and a Colonial Town

Ek Balam is a Maya city in the jungle north of Valladolid, and unlike Chichén Itzá its main pyramid, the Acropolis, can still be climbed. Near the top, a remarkably preserved stucco doorway carved as the open jaws of a monster guards the tomb of the ruler Ukit Kan Le'k Tok'. Foreign adults pay about 691 MXN (about €33), and the site opens from 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00.
October is one of the best months to go, with summer's heat easing and crowds light. Combine the site with Valladolid, a colonial town of pastel facades about 30 minutes south, where the 16th-century Convent of San Bernardino de Siena and the main square sit within walking distance. Late October also brings the first Day of the Dead altars to Valladolid ahead of 1 and 2 November.
Pro Tip: Climb the Acropolis first thing, as the steps heat up by late morning, then have lunch in Valladolid and try the local longaniza sausage and sopa de lima.

Yes, especially in the second half of the month. Hotel rates sit roughly 30 to 45% below the December peak, crowds are among the lowest of the year and the sea is warm. The trade-off is storm risk in early October, so travellers who can choose should aim for 15 to 31 October and book refundable rates.
Yes, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Risk in Cancun is moderate in the first ten days of October and low by the last ten. Most October disruption comes from a tropical depression bringing a couple of days of heavy rain, but Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 is why travel insurance and the National Hurricane Center forecast matter.
Yes, with five days and a base in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Puerto Morelos and Akumal fit one day along Highway 307, Cozumel needs a full day including the ferry from Playa del Carmen, Tulum can follow Akumal or stand alone, and Ek Balam with Valladolid is a long day trip west, best by rental car.

Puerto Morelos beaches are free.
Cancun in October is also a good time for the attractions in our main Cancun guide, including Playa Delfines, Isla Mujeres, the MUSA underwater museum, Chichén Itzá and Xcaret Park. Late in the month, consider Xcaret's Festival of Life and Death around Day of the Dead, Mérida for its own Day of the Dead celebrations and the freshwater lagoon at Bacalar. Whale shark tours finish in mid-September.
