Bergen Travel Facts
Bergen is Norway's second-largest city and the official gateway to the western fjords. Wedged between seven mountains and a deep-water harbour, it has a compact, walkable centre dominated by the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf - rows of crooked wooden trading houses that have lined the quay since the days of the Hanseatic League.
Beyond Bryggen, Bergen offers a thriving fish market, the funicular up Mount Floyen for the city's best view, and direct access by boat and train to the Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, and the famous Norway in a Nutshell route. The weather is famously wet - rain falls on roughly two of every three days - so locals say a Bergener is born with an umbrella in hand.

Bergen Destination FAQ
May to September offers the warmest and driest weather, ideal for fjord cruises, hiking, and the city's outdoor sights. June and July bring nearly 19 hours of daylight. December to February is dark but atmospheric, with the chance of snow and aurora outside the city.
Bergen Airport (BGO) at Flesland is around 14 km south of the centre. The fastest option is the Bybanen light rail, which runs every 5-10 minutes and reaches the city centre in about 25 minutes. Taxis cost around NOK 400-500.
Central Bergen is easily walkable - most sights, including Bryggen, the fish market, and the funicular, are within 15 minutes of each other on foot. The Bybanen tram and Skyss buses cover the wider city. A Bergen Card includes free transit, museum entry, and discounts.
Two full days is enough for the city itself - Bryggen, Mt. Floyen, the fish market, and a museum or two. Add another 2-3 days if you want to do a Norway in a Nutshell trip, the Hardangerfjord, or a Sognefjord cruise from Bergen.
Bergen is very safe. Crime rates are low and walking around the centre at night is generally fine. The main hazards are weather-related - slippery wet cobbles in the old town and changeable conditions if you hike in the mountains.
