Poiana Brașov travel facts
Poiana Brașov is a mountain resort at about 1,020 metres on the Postăvarul Massif, administratively a district of the city of Brașov rather than a separate town. It occupies a forest clearing, with Postăvarul rising to 1,799 metres above it and the Bucegi, Piatra Craiului and Piatra Mare ranges visible across the valley. Almost the entire settlement consists of hotels, chalets, ski rental shops and restaurants.
This is Romania's best-known winter sports resort. Modernisation through the 2010s took the piste network from under 14 kilometres to roughly 24 kilometres, added snowmaking to most slopes and installed a gondola alongside the two older cable cars. Drumul Roșu, at just under 5 kilometres, is the longest run in the country, and the black pistes Lupului and Kanzel provide the steeper terrain. The season generally holds from December to March.
Brașov city centre is 12 kilometres away and served by RATBV bus lines 20 and 100, so it is easy to combine skiing with the Gothic churches and Saxon squares of the old town. Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport (GHV) opened in 2023 and lies about 20 kilometres away, while Bucharest Henri Coandă (OTP) is roughly 170 kilometres south, two and a half to three hours by road. Bran Castle, Râșnov Citadel and the fortified churches of Transylvania are all within day-trip range.
