Hammamet Travel Facts

Hammamet is Tunisia's original resort town, set on the Cap Bon peninsula about an hour southeast of Tunis. Its long, soft-sand beaches, whitewashed medina, and 15th-century kasbah on the seafront have made it one of the country's most popular destinations since the 1960s.

Beyond the main beach strip, the purpose-built Yasmine Hammamet to the south delivers larger all-inclusive resorts, a marina, and the Medina Mediterranea theme zone. The Carthage ruins, the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said, and the Roman amphitheatre at El Jem are within easy reach for day trips.

Hammamet Destination FAQ

May to early October is beach season, with the warmest sea temperatures in July and August - and the biggest crowds. Late April, May, June, and September offer pleasant warm days without peak prices. Winters are mild but largely off-season for beach resorts.

Most travellers fly into Enfidha-Hammamet Airport (NBE), about 40 km south, with most package hotels providing transfers. Tunis-Carthage (TUN) is around 70 km north - reachable by louage (shared taxi) or private taxi for around 60-80 TND in around an hour.

The medina and beachfront are walkable. Taxis are cheap and metered for trips to Yasmine Hammamet, Nabeul, or Carthage. Louages (shared taxis) cover longer routes between cities. Many resorts run free shuttles between their property and the old medina.

Most travellers stay 7 nights on a typical beach package. Three to four nights is enough to combine the medina, the beach, Yasmine Hammamet, and a day trip to Sidi Bou Said and Carthage.

Hammamet itself is very safe and used to international tourists. The main hassles are persistent vendors in the medina and beach hawkers. Check current travel advisories before booking, especially if planning trips to the south or border regions.
