Events in Italy: what to know
Carnival spans about two and a half weeks rather than a single weekend, so the dates are more flexible than most events allow. The closing weekend and Shrove Tuesday are the busiest; the earlier weekdays are quieter and cheaper with the same programme running.
Venice is small and its bed supply is limited, so the mainland at Mestre absorbs the overflow, around 10 minutes by train from Santa Lucia.
