About Venice Carnival 2027
The Venice Carnival returns from 23 January to 9 February 2027, ending as always on Shrove Tuesday. For two and a half weeks the city fills with masks and costumes: processions and shows around St Mark's Square, festivities on the water, and masked balls in the palazzi.
The opening weekend traditionally starts on the water, with illuminated boat parades along the canals, and the program builds through the weekends to the final week. Street events are free; the grand costume balls and some shows are ticketed and sell out well ahead.
Staying in San Marco or near the Rialto puts you at the centre of the action - and the crowds. Cannaregio and Dorsoduro stay calmer a short walk away, while Mestre on the mainland offers better value with a quick train across the lagoon. The final week to Shrove Tuesday is the peak, and hotels across the city fill for its weekends.
