Events in Venice: what to know
The street programme, the masked processions and the water parade are free and open to anyone. The palazzo balls are ticketed separately and often sell out months ahead, so they are the part to plan around.
San Marco is the busiest and most expensive place to stay. Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello are quieter, still walkable, and better value. Mestre on the mainland is cheaper again and about 10 minutes by train from Santa Lucia.
