Carrer de Marià Labèrnia, Horta-Guinardó, 08032 Barcelona, Spain
The Bunkers del Carmel are the remains of an anti-aircraft battery built on Turó de la Rovira hill during the Spanish Civil War, later covered by a shanty town and now restored as a heritage site. From the concrete platforms, 262 metres up, the whole city spreads out in a 360-degree panorama from the Sagrada Família to the port and the Collserola hills.
The site became so popular for summer sunsets that the city now controls access in the evenings, and the upper platforms can be closed after dark. October is calmer than summer, and clearer air after autumn storms gives some of the best visibility of the year. A small interpretation centre explains the site's history.
Bring water and a layer: there are no facilities at the top, and the wind picks up once the sun drops.
Pro Tip: Go in the late afternoon on the day after a rainstorm, when visibility is sharpest, and check current evening access rules before planning for sunset. Combine it with Park Güell, 20 minutes' walk away.
