75001 Paris, France
The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain left boulevard Raspail and opened at 2 place du Palais-Royal in October 2025, the newest building in this guide by a wide margin. Jean Nouvel designed both versions, thirty-one years apart. The shell is an 1855 Haussmannian block facing the Louvre; the inside was rebuilt to give 8,500 square metres of public space, 6,500 of them exhibition floor, organised around five mobile platforms settable at eleven heights. Shows are rehung by moving the floors, not the walls.
During Art Basel Paris week this is the one large venue whose late night lands before the fair rather than after it. The Fondation stays open until 22:00 on Tuesdays, and Tuesday 20 October 2026 is the day before the fair's preview days begin, when the Grand Palais is still closed to visitors. The downsides are real: 15 euros with no free permanent collection to fall back on, and the platform layout creates real bottlenecks once the building is busy, which it will be from Thursday onwards.
Metro lines 1 and 7 both serve Palais Royal - Musee du Louvre, whose exits open onto the same square less than 100 m from the entrance; RER A, B and D at Chatelet-Les Halles is a 10-minute walk, and buses 21 and 67 stop nearby. Hours are 11:00 to 20:00 Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 22:00 on Tuesday, closed Monday. Reduced admission is 10 euros. La Manufacture, the 300 square metre education space, only opened in spring 2026.
Pro Tip: Book the 11:00 slot on Tuesday 20 October, before the fair's preview crowd arrives in the city. Entry is 15 euros full, 10 euros reduced, and the Tuesday closing time of 22:00 gives you a second run at it the same evening.
