The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the largest plant collections in the world, spread over 132 hectares beside the Thames. Its arboretum holds thousands of trees, and late October is when maples, sweet gums, oaks and ginkgos turn Kew into the most colourful garden in London. The Victorian glasshouses, including the Palm House and the Temperate House, make it a good choice even on a showery day.

The treetop walkway, 18 metres up in the canopy, is the best way to see the colour from above. Allow at least half a day, and more if you want to reach the quieter western side of the gardens near Queen Charlotte's Cottage. Tickets are cheaper online than at the gate, and opening hours shorten once the clocks change on 25 October.

Kew's evening Halloween and later Christmas events are ticketed separately.

Pro Tip: Visit in the last ten days of October on a weekday, head straight for the treetop walkway at opening, then walk the Great Broad Walk borders to the Palm House for lunch in the glasshouse warmth.
