St Peter's Church (Sveta Petera baznica) is Vecriga's tallest building and its most useful landmark - the 123-metre wooden spire is visible from anywhere in the city and orients every walk through the Old Town. First mentioned in 1209, the church took its current three-nave Gothic form by 1409 and was topped by a wooden spire in 1491 - at various points the tallest wooden structure in the world. The current spire is a 1970s post-war reconstruction using a reinforced-concrete frame under the traditional copper cladding.

The main visitor draw is the lift to the observation deck at 72 metres - the highest publicly accessible viewpoint over Vecriga. From up there you see the full spread of the Old Town roofs, the Daugava river, the Zeppelin hangars of Central Market and the towers of the Academy of Sciences. Entry is 9 EUR in 2026 including the lift both ways. The church interior below is free and holds the tomb of Bremen native architect Rupert Bindenschu who completed the Baroque west facade in 1690.

Pro Tip: Go up before noon - afternoon light backlights the Vecriga view and turns the roofs flat. The lift closes 30 minutes before the church itself so aim for a 17:00 last ascent in summer.
