30 Seng Poh Road, Singapore 168898, Singapore
Tiong Bahru is Singapore's oldest public housing estate and its most photographed. Block 55 was completed in December 1936 under the Singapore Improvement Trust, and 20 pre-war blocks were gazetted for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 2003, along with 36 shophouses on Outram Road. The style is Streamline Moderne: curved balconies, horizontal banding, spiral staircases at the rear. Residents nicknamed the blocks fei ji lou, or aeroplane flats, for the way the corners bank like a fuselage. People still live in almost all of them.
Four kilometres west of the convention centre and one stop past Outram Park, Tiong Bahru is close enough to work as a real escape between sessions and far enough out that TOKEN2049 barely registers. Tiong Bahru Market at 30 Seng Poh Road opens at 06:00 and runs until 22:00, with a wet market on the ground floor and a hawker deck above it, and breakfast there costs a fraction of anything sold inside Marina Bay during conference week. The current building replaced a 1950s market in a mid-2000s rebuild. Queues at the best-known stalls form before 08:00 and the seating fills fast, which is the real constraint here rather than tourists.
The rest of the estate rewards a slow lap. Yong Siak Street holds an independent bookshop and a short row of cafes, and a wartime air raid shelter survives beneath Block 78 Moh Guan Terrace, though it opens only for occasional guided visits, so do not build a morning around it.
Pro Tip: Be at Tiong Bahru Market by 07:30, eat upstairs on the hawker deck, then walk the loop of Seng Poh Road, Eng Hoon Street and Moh Guan Terrace before 09:00. Tiong Bahru station (EW17) is eight minutes on foot and puts you at Raffles Place in three stops if you have a 10:00 session.
