Bosnia & Herzegovina travel facts

Bosnia & Herzegovina is the point where the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian worlds met and never quite separated, and Sarajevo is the clearest expression of it: a single street where a Turkish bazaar, an Orthodox cathedral, a Catholic cathedral, a synagogue and a Habsburg boulevard sit within a few minutes' walk. Beyond the cities lie the Dinaric Alps, the emerald Neretva river and the rebuilt Ottoman bridge at Mostar, and the country remains among the best-value destinations anywhere in Europe.

Bosnia & Herzegovina Travel FAQ

Most Western nationalities do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That covers EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders. Anyone holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa can also enter visa-free, which is useful for nationalities that would otherwise need one. Bosnia is not in the EU or Schengen, so time spent here does not count against your Schengen allowance.

May to June and September to October are the sweet spots, with warm days, open mountain roads and manageable crowds in Mostar. July and August are hot, particularly in the Herzegovina lowlands where Mostar regularly exceeds 35°C, and the old bridge area gets packed with day trippers from the Croatian coast. Winter turns Sarajevo into a genuine ski destination, with Jahorina and Bjelašnica, both 1984 Olympic venues, under an hour from the city.

Yes, Bosnia is a safe country for visitors with low violent crime and very welcoming hospitality. The one genuine legacy risk is landmines from the 1990s war, which remain in some rural and mountainous areas: stay on marked paths and established trails, take posted warning signs seriously, and use a local guide for off-trail hiking. In cities, normal precautions against pickpocketing are enough. The war is recent enough that it is a live topic, so approach discussions of it with care.

The Convertible Mark (BAM, locally KM) is the currency, pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate of roughly 1.96 KM to 1 EUR. Euros are accepted in some tourist businesses in Mostar and Sarajevo but usually at a poor rate, so withdrawing marks from an ATM is better value. Cash is still king outside the main cities, and many small restaurants, guesthouses and bus tickets are cash-only. Bosnia is one of the cheapest countries in Europe.

Buses are the backbone of the network and reach almost everywhere, though schedules are sparse and journeys slow on mountain roads. The Sarajevo to Mostar train is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe, following the Neretva canyon in about two hours, but runs only a couple of times a day. Renting a car gives far more freedom for the countryside, waterfalls and Herzegovina villages; confirm with the rental company before crossing into Croatia or Montenegro, as a green card and cross-border permission are needed.
