Marseille is France's oldest city and its most unruly, a Mediterranean port founded by Greek sailors 2,600 years ago and shaped ever since by everyone who has arrived by sea. The Vieux-Port still sits at the centre of everything, with fishing boats unloading each morning below the hilltop basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde.
The city divides into sharply different neighbourhoods: Le Panier's narrow lanes above the port, the market bustle of Noailles, the design-led docks at La Joliette and the MuCEM, and the seaside villas of the Corniche. Just beyond the southern edge, the white limestone inlets of the Calanques National Park drop straight into turquoise water.
Marseille rewards visitors who treat it as a working city rather than a resort. Eat bouillabaisse where the fishermen do, take the ferry to the If and Frioul islands, and use the fast TGV connections to reach Aix-en-Provence, Cassis and Arles on day trips.

May, June and September are the best months to visit Marseille. The sea is warm enough to swim, the Calanques are open for hiking, and the July-August crowds have not arrived or have left. Summer brings 30°C heat and a partial fire-risk closure of the Calanques trails, while winter is mild but windy under the mistral.
Take the shuttle bus, which runs every 10-15 minutes to Saint-Charles station in about 25 minutes. Marseille Provence Airport is 27 km northwest of the city. A taxi takes roughly 30 minutes and costs several times more.
The two metro lines and the tram cover most of what visitors need, and the centre is walkable. RTM runs the network and sells single tickets and day passes. For the Calanques, take a bus to Luminy or Callelongue, or a boat from the Vieux-Port.
Three days covers Marseille properly. One for the Vieux-Port, Le Panier and Notre-Dame de la Garde, one for the MuCEM and the Corniche, and one for the Calanques or the If islands. Add a fourth if you want a day trip to Cassis or Aix-en-Provence.
Marseille is safe in the areas visitors use, though it requires more street awareness than smaller French cities. Pickpocketing around Saint-Charles station and the Vieux-Port is the main issue, and phone snatching happens. The northern districts are residential and of no interest to travellers.
Cassis is the classic day trip, 30 minutes away with its own harbour and calanques. Aix-en-Provence is 30 minutes by bus, Arles and its Roman arena about an hour by train, and the Camargue wetlands and Avignon are both within reach.
