Cannes Travel Facts
Cannes is a glamorous resort city on the French Riviera, synonymous with its annual film festival, palm-lined promenade, and sweeping bay on the Mediterranean. Once a modest fishing village, it grew into a byword for luxury in the 19th century, and today balances designer boutiques and grand hotels with a walkable old quarter and easy access to the wider Côte d'Azur.
The seafront Boulevard de la Croisette runs past the Palais des Festivals, sandy beaches, and belle-époque façades, while the old town of Le Suquet climbs the hill to a castle and panoramic views. Just offshore, the Lérins Islands offer pine forests and a monastery, and the perfume town of Grasse and hilltop villages lie a short drive inland.
Cannes is compact and easily explored on foot, with a warm, dry Mediterranean climate. It's busiest and priciest during the May film festival and high summer, but spring and autumn bring pleasant weather and thinner crowds.

Cannes Destination FAQ
The best time to visit Cannes is from May to September, when the Riviera weather is warm and the beaches are inviting. May is famous for the Cannes Film Festival, which brings glamour and higher prices, while July and August are hot, lively, and busy. June and September offer a sweet spot of warm seas and thinner crowds. Winters are mild and much quieter, with many beach clubs closed.
The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE), about 27 km northeast of Cannes. The quickest options are the express airport bus and taking the tram to Nice then a train onward, with the train from Nice to Cannes taking around 30 minutes. A direct taxi or private transfer takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic along the coast.
You do not need a car in Cannes, which is easy to explore on foot, with the Croisette, the old town of Le Suquet, and the port all close together. Palm Bus runs the local network with single tickets around €1.50, and frequent regional trains link Cannes to Antibes, Nice, and Monaco along the coast. A car is only useful for reaching hilltop villages inland, and parking near the centre is limited and pricey.
Two days is enough to enjoy the essentials of Cannes, strolling the Boulevard de la Croisette, exploring Le Suquet's old town, and relaxing on the beaches. A boat trip to the peaceful Îles de Lérins adds a memorable half-day. With more time, Cannes makes a stylish base for day trips to Antibes, Grasse, Nice, and the perfume and pottery towns of the hinterland.
Cannes is a safe and upscale resort town, and most visits pass without incident. The main risk is petty theft, including pickpocketing and bag-snatching around the Croisette, the beaches, the train station, and during major events when the town is packed. Keep valuables secure and do not leave belongings unattended on the sand, and normal precautions are generally sufficient.
One of the best things to do from Cannes is a short boat trip to the Îles de Lérins, just offshore. Sainte-Marguerite is covered in fragrant pine and eucalyptus forest and holds the fort linked to the legend of the Man in the Iron Mask, while tiny Saint-Honorat is home to a working monastery whose monks produce wine. Ferries run frequently from the old port and the crossing takes about 15 minutes.
