Gubbio is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Italy, a cascade of grey limestone houses climbing the slopes of Monte Ingino in northern Umbria. Its centrepiece is the Piazza Grande, a vast terrace suspended over the town, dominated by the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli with sweeping views over the valley.
The palazzo's museum displays the Iguvine Tablets, bronze plates inscribed in the ancient Umbrian language, and a Roman theatre lies just outside the walls. An open-air cage-style cable car carries visitors up to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, the town's patron saint. Gubbio is also linked to the legend of St Francis taming a wolf, and is known for its lustreware ceramics.
Gubbio is famous for the Corsa dei Ceri race each May and for the giant Christmas tree of lights on the mountainside in winter. Quiet and authentic, it is a rewarding stop on an Umbria road trip, within easy reach of Perugia and Assisi, with excellent truffle-based cooking.
