The best time to visit Cinque Terre is May, June, September and early October, when temperatures are pleasant and crowds smaller than mid-summer. July and August bring the busiest and hottest days, with limited shade on trails. Winter is quiet but many trails, hotels and restaurants close for the season.
Most visitors arrive by train, changing at La Spezia or Levanto onto the local Cinque Terre Express line that stops at all five villages. The nearest airports are Pisa (about 1.5 hours away by train), Genoa or Florence. Cars are not useful inside the villages, so leave any rental at a parking lot outside the park.
The Cinque Terre Express train runs between all five villages every 15-30 minutes and is the fastest option, typically 3-6 minutes between stops. Ferries connect four of the villages (skipping Corniglia) with sea views on the way. Coastal hiking trails, some paid via the Cinque Terre Card, are a slower but scenic alternative.
Two to three days is ideal for Cinque Terre. That's enough time to visit all five villages, tackle at least one hike, take a boat ride and enjoy the food scene without rushing. Longer stays let you swim, explore Portovenere or Lerici, and settle into the slow rhythm of the Ligurian coast.
