Trento is an elegant Alpine city in northern Italy, set in the Adige valley and surrounded by the foothills of the Dolomites. It is best known as the host of the Council of Trent in the 16th century, and its frescoed palazzi and harmonious Piazza Duomo, with the Fountain of Neptune and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Vigilio, still reflect that Renaissance prestige.
The Buonconsiglio Castle, once home to the prince-bishops, holds the Cycle of the Months frescoes in its Torre Aquila, while Renzo Piano's MUSE science museum is a modern landmark. A short cable car ride climbs to the village of Sardagna for views over the city, and in winter Trento's Christmas markets fill the old squares.
Mixing Italian and Alpine culture, Trento is famous for its Trentodoc sparkling wine, hearty mountain cooking and very high quality of life. It is an ideal base for Lake Garda, the Brenta Dolomites and Monte Bondone, and is well connected by train to Verona, Bolzano and Innsbruck.

May to September is the best time to visit Trento for hiking, lakes and outdoor dining. Late November to early January brings Trento's Christmas markets, and winter is the season for skiing in the nearby Dolomites. Summers in the valley can be hot, but the mountains are only a short trip away.
The nearest airport to Trento is Verona Villafranca, about 100 km away. Take the airport bus to Verona Porta Nuova station, then a train up the Adige valley to Trento, for a total journey of around 1.5 hours. Trento's station is right next to the old town.
You do not need a car in Trento itself. The historic centre is compact and walkable, and buses and trains connect the city to Lake Garda, Rovereto and many valley towns. A car is useful for reaching remote Dolomites trailheads and mountain villages.
One to two days is enough to see Trento's sights. That covers Piazza Duomo, the Buonconsiglio Castle and the MUSE science museum. Plan three or more days if you want to use Trento as a base for Lake Garda and the mountains.
Yes, Trento is one of the safest cities in Italy. It regularly ranks near the top of Italian quality-of-life surveys. Normal precautions are enough, especially around the train station and at busy Christmas markets.
