Brunei is a small, oil-rich sultanate on the north coast of Borneo, wrapped almost entirely by Malaysian Sarawak and covered in some of the best-preserved primary rainforest in Southeast Asia. Bandar Seri Begawan is built around Kampong Ayer, a water village of stilt houses on the Brunei River where thousands still live, overlooked by the gold-domed Omar Ali Saifuddien and Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosques. Inland, Ulu Temburong National Park offers canopy walkways above untouched jungle, reached by longboat.
