Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean countries and the most efficiently packed, offering Amazon rainforest, high volcanoes, cloud forest and Pacific coast within a day's travel of each other. Quito sits at 2,850 metres with the best-preserved colonial old town in the Americas, the Avenue of the Volcanoes runs south past Cotopaxi towards Baños, and Otavalo hosts one of the continent's great indigenous markets. Then there are the Galápagos, 900 kilometres offshore, where the wildlife has no instinct to flee from people.
