Guatemala has the strongest living Maya culture in Central America, with more than twenty indigenous languages still spoken and highland markets like Chichicastenango that function as they have for centuries rather than as displays. Tikal's temples rise above the Petén rainforest canopy in the north, Lake Atitlán fills a volcanic caldera ringed by three cones and a dozen villages, and Antigua's cobbled streets and ruined churches sit beneath the constantly erupting Volcán de Fuego. The overnight hike up neighbouring Acatenango to watch those eruptions has become one of the region's defining experiences.
