Kuala Lumpur, often shortened to KL, is the capital of Malaysia and the heart of a metro area of around 8 million people. It is a city of contrasts - the twin Petronas Towers and modern Bukit Bintang nightlife next to colonial-era Merdeka Square, the Batu Caves' Hindu shrine, and the wooden shophouses of Chinatown.

The city's mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures shows up most clearly in the food: hawker stalls in Jalan Alor, Indian-Muslim mamak joints, Chinese coffee shops, and high-end Malay restaurants all within a short ride. KL also makes an easy base for day trips to the Batu Caves, the hill station of Genting, or the cooler tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands.
