Hotels in Mozambique

Mozambique has 2,500 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, and that is the reason to come. Warm water, coral reefs, dhows under sail and long empty beaches run the length of the country, from the South African border in the south to the Tanzanian border in the north, backed by a Portuguese colonial history that shows up in the language, the architecture and the food.

Tofo, near Inhambane, is the diving capital, known for reliable manta ray cleaning stations and seasonal whale sharks. Offshore from Vilanculos, the Bazaruto Archipelago is a national park of five islands built from vast sand dunes, with dugongs in the channels and a handful of serious lodges. Maputo itself is worth a night or two for its Portuguese-era buildings, a market in a Gustave Eiffel-designed iron building, and some of the best seafood and peri-peri prawns in Africa.

Two practical points matter. An armed insurgency in the far north means Cabo Delgado, including the Quirimbas Archipelago, carries Do Not Travel warnings, while the south and centre operate normally. And since February 2026 all visitors need either an Electronic Travel Authorisation or an eVisa arranged before departure, checked by airlines at boarding.
