North Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan country built around Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, whose shoreline town holds Byzantine churches, a hilltop fortress and beaches that feel oddly Mediterranean for somewhere 700 metres above sea level. Skopje in the north is a genuinely strange capital, its Ottoman bazaar sitting across the Vardar from a government-commissioned quarter of neoclassical facades and outsized statues. Add the Shar and Mavrovo mountains, Balkan food at a fraction of Western European prices, and one of the region's least crowded travel scenes.
