Uruguay is small, stable and relaxed in a way that sets it apart from its larger neighbours, and it is often described as South America's most liveable country. Montevideo has a long rambla along the River Plate, a serious appetite for asado and the Mercado del Puerto where it is grilled. Colonia del Sacramento's cobbled Portuguese quarter is a UNESCO site an hour by ferry from Buenos Aires. In summer the Atlantic coast fills up, from the high-rise glamour of Punta del Este to the dunes and shacks of Cabo Polonio, which has no roads or mains electricity.
