Calgary travel facts

Calgary sits where the prairies meet the foothills, an hour from the Rocky Mountains and built on oil money, which shows in a downtown of glass towers connected by the Plus 15, a 16 km network of enclosed elevated walkways that lets you cross the core without going outside in January.

The Calgary Stampede in July is the city's defining event, ten days of rodeo, chuckwagon racing and free pancake breakfasts that shut down normal business entirely. Outside Stampede season, the East Village and Inglewood hold the best restaurants and independent shops, the Studio Bell National Music Centre is a striking building with serious content, and Prince's Island Park sits in the Bow River.

Most visitors treat Calgary as the gateway to the Rockies, with Banff 90 minutes west and Kananaskis Country closer still. The city's chinook winds are a genuine local phenomenon, capable of lifting winter temperatures by 20°C in a matter of hours.

Calgary Destination FAQ

June to September is the best window, with warm, dry, sunny days and easy access to the Rockies. The Calgary Stampede runs for ten days in July and transforms the city, though hotel prices roughly double and book out months ahead. September is excellent for mountain trips with fewer crowds. Winter is cold but frequently interrupted by chinook winds that can raise the temperature 20°C within hours.

Calgary International is 17 km northeast of downtown. Calgary Transit Route 300 is a bus rapid transit service running to the centre in about 45 minutes for a modest fare. A taxi or rideshare takes around 25 minutes. If you are heading straight to Banff, the airport shuttles depart directly from the terminal, so you never need to enter the city at all.

It depends entirely on what you want. Stampede is genuinely enormous, with rodeo, chuckwagon racing, concerts, a midway and free pancake breakfasts across the city, and the whole place shifts into western dress for ten days. If that appeals, book accommodation months in advance and expect crowds and premium prices. If you are really here for the mountains, avoid the Stampede window entirely, when rates across southern Alberta rise sharply.

Yes, Banff is around 90 minutes west on the Trans-Canada Highway, and Canmore and Kananaskis Country are closer still. A day trip works, though you will spend three hours driving and the mountains deserve longer. Remember you need a Parks Canada pass to enter Banff National Park even for a day, and that Moraine Lake requires a pre-booked shuttle rather than driving yourself.
