Halifax travel facts
Halifax is the largest city in Atlantic Canada and has one of the world's great natural harbours, which shaped everything about it. The star-shaped Citadel looks down over downtown, the boardwalk runs for several kilometres along the water, and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic holds the most significant Titanic collection anywhere, since Halifax was the port that recovered the dead.
That maritime history has a darker chapter too: the 1917 Halifax Explosion, when a munitions ship detonated in the harbour, was the largest human-made explosion before the atomic age and flattened much of the north end. Pier 21, meanwhile, was Canada's Ellis Island, processing a million immigrants and now a national museum.
The city has a young, lively feel thanks to six universities, with a dense concentration of pubs and live music on Argyle Street. Nova Scotia's coast is the wider draw, with Peggy's Cove lighthouse 45 minutes away, the UNESCO-listed town of Lunenburg an hour, and the Bay of Fundy's extreme tides within a few hours.

June to October is the strongest window. Summer brings warm days, the busy waterfront boardwalk and a dense festival calendar, while late September and October add Nova Scotia's autumn colour and the tail of lobster and seafood season. Spring is cool and often foggy, and winter is cold and windy with far fewer tour operators running, though hotel rates drop sharply. Hurricane season peaks in September, and the occasional storm can disrupt travel.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport sits about 35 km northeast of the city, roughly a 35 to 40 minute drive. Halifax Transit route 320 runs to downtown for the standard bus fare and takes around an hour, while taxis and ride-hailing charge a flat-rate style fare of roughly CAD 70. Several hotels and rental car desks operate at the airport if you are picking up a vehicle for a road trip.
Peggy's Cove is about 45 minutes from downtown and is the most photographed spot in Nova Scotia, a working fishing village around a lighthouse on bare granite. Go early or late to avoid tour coaches, and stay off the dark wet rocks near the water, where waves have swept people out. A viewing deck built in 2021 makes the site accessible, and the drive can be extended along the coast to Lunenburg.
Two days is enough for the city itself: the waterfront boardwalk, the Citadel, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic with its Titanic collection, and an evening on Argyle Street. A third and fourth day let you drive out to Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and the South Shore. If you want the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton, plan a week, as it is a five-hour drive from Halifax.
