The Cologne Christmas market at the cathedral opens on 16 November 2026 and runs until 23 December, beneath the twin Gothic spires of Cologne Cathedral. It is only one of several markets in the city: Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town opens on 23 November, and its Heumarkt section, with an ice rink, stays open until 10 January 2027. Entry to all the markets is free.

This guide covers the 5 best Cologne Christmas markets, from the cathedral market on Roncalliplatz and the two Heinzels Wintermärchen squares to the angel-themed market on Neumarkt and the riverside Harbour Market by the Chocolate Museum. Each entry has the 2026 dates where confirmed, the address, the nearest station and a Pro Tip.

The order follows a walking route. Start at the cathedral, a two-minute walk from Köln Hauptbahnhof, then head south through the Old Town to Alter Markt and Heumarkt, continue along the Rhine to the Harbour Market, and finish west at Neumarkt. A small Christmas market tram links four of the central markets.

Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market - The Market Beneath the Dom

Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market - The Market Beneath the Dom

The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom on Roncalliplatz is the best-known Cologne Christmas market, set directly beneath the south side of Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 2026 market runs from 16 November to 23 December. A huge Christmas tree, said to be one of the largest in the Rhineland, stands at the centre, and a canopy of lights stretches over the stalls.

The wooden chalets sell crafts, glass ornaments, candles and toys, along with food such as Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), bratwurst and gingerbread. Glühwein comes in a collectible mug with a deposit. A stage hosts free concerts most evenings.

Köln Hauptbahnhof is only about two minutes away on foot, which makes this the easiest Christmas market in Germany to reach by train, and also one of the most crowded.

Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday before 4pm to avoid the evening crush, then return after dark for the lights. Try Reibekuchen with apple sauce, a Cologne speciality sold at several stalls.

Heinzels Wintermärchen on Alter Markt - The Gnome-Themed Old Town Market

Heinzels Wintermärchen on Alter Markt - The Gnome-Themed Old Town Market

Heinzels Wintermärchen takes its name from the Heinzelmännchen, the legendary house gnomes who were said to do Cologne's work at night until a curious tailor's wife chased them away. Gnome figures decorate the stalls, and the market sprawls across the Old Town squares around the historic City Hall.

The Alter Markt section runs from 23 November to 23 December 2026. Its stalls sell crafts and food, and the narrow lanes between the squares are lined with traditional Kölsch breweries, where the local beer is served in slim glasses.

Many visitors name Heinzels as their favourite Cologne Christmas market for its playful decorations and Old Town setting, which feels cosier than the cathedral market.

Pro Tip: Combine Alter Markt with a Kölsch in one of the Old Town brewery taverns nearby. The waiters keep bringing fresh glasses until you place a beer mat on top of yours.

Heinzels Wintermärchen on Heumarkt - Ice Rink and Market Until January

Heinzels Wintermärchen on Heumarkt - Ice Rink and Market Until January

The Heumarkt section of Heinzels Wintermärchen is the only part of the Old Town market that stays open after Christmas. In 2026 it runs from 23 November until 10 January 2027, making it the best option for anyone visiting Cologne between Christmas and Epiphany.

The highlight is the ice rink, with skating paths that wind between the stalls, and curling lanes for groups. Food and drink stalls surround the rink, and the equestrian statue of King Frederick William III stands at the centre of the square.

Heumarkt has its own tram and U-Bahn stop, so it is easy to reach, and it is a short walk from both Alter Markt and the Rhine riverside.

Pro Tip: Skate in the early evening on a weekday for the quietest sessions. If you are in Cologne after 23 December, Heumarkt and the Harbour Market are the places to go.

Angels' Christmas Market on Neumarkt - Lights and Wandering Angels

Angels' Christmas Market on Neumarkt - Lights and Wandering Angels

The Markt der Engel (Angels' Market) on Neumarkt is the most romantic Cologne Christmas market. White chalets stand beneath trees strung with thousands of fairy lights and paper stars, and performers dressed as angels wander through the stalls handing out small gifts.

The 2026 market runs from 16 November to 23 December. The stalls sell crafts, jewellery and gifts, and the food and drink are a step up from the average market, with upscale bars and seasonal specialities.

Neumarkt is a major tram and U-Bahn hub, and the market is also on the route of the small Christmas market tram that links the main markets in the centre.

Pro Tip: Visit after dark, when the canopy of lights over Neumarkt is at its best. It is the most photogenic Cologne market and a good choice for couples or a quieter evening drink.

Harbour Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum - Riverside Stalls

Harbour Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum - Riverside Stalls

The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Harbour Christmas Market) sets up beside the Chocolate Museum on the Rheinauhafen peninsula, with white sail-like stalls and nautical touches such as ship-themed mulled wine stands. It has the longest season of the city's markets, typically running from mid-November into early January; check the organiser's website for the exact 2026 dates.

The market is calmer and more open than the Old Town markets, with views across the Rhine and towards the Kranhäuser, the crane-shaped office buildings that have become a landmark of modern Cologne. There is usually a Ferris wheel and plenty of food and drink stalls.

The Chocolate Museum next door makes an easy pairing, especially on a cold or wet afternoon.

Pro Tip: Visit the Chocolate Museum in the afternoon, then walk out to the Harbour Market as it gets dark. The riverside walk back towards the cathedral is one of the best night views in Cologne.
