Delhi has been the seat of power in northern India for the better part of a thousand years, and every dynasty that held it left something behind. The result is a city of roughly 33 million where a twelfth-century minaret, a Mughal fort and a Lutyens-designed government quarter all sit within a few kilometres of each other.
Old Delhi is the Mughal city — the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid and the rickshaw-clogged lanes of Chandni Chowk. New Delhi, laid out by the British in the 1910s, is wide, green and orderly by comparison, holding India Gate and the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar, both UNESCO sites, anchor the south.
The metro makes the city far more manageable than its reputation suggests, and it is the natural starting point for the Golden Triangle — Agra and the Taj Mahal are two hours away by express train, Jaipur about four hours by road.

October to March is the best time to visit Delhi. February and March are particularly pleasant, before the extreme heat of April to June sets in. Air quality deteriorates sharply in November and December, which is worth factoring in if you have respiratory issues.
Take the Airport Express metro from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station, which takes about 20 minutes and is by far the fastest option. Prepaid taxis and Uber are available but take 45-60 minutes in traffic. Always use the official prepaid counter rather than accepting offers in the arrivals hall.
The metro is clean, air-conditioned, cheap and reaches almost every major sight. Buy a smart card or a tourist day pass at any station. Uber and Ola fill the gaps, and auto-rickshaws are fine for short hops if you agree the fare or insist on the meter first.
Three days covers Delhi well. One for Old Delhi and the Red Fort, one for New Delhi and the southern monuments, and one for museums, markets or a day trip to Agra. Two days is enough if you are treating it as a stop on a Golden Triangle route.
Take the Gatimaan or Shatabdi express train from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi to Agra, which takes under two hours. Booking a few days ahead is advisable. Driving takes three to four hours on the Yamuna Expressway, and the Taj is closed to visitors on Fridays.
Delhi is manageable with sensible precautions, though it requires more vigilance than most destinations. Scams are the biggest problem — fake tourist offices near Connaught Place, drivers claiming your hotel has closed, and unsolicited "help" at the station. Book transport through apps, and women travelling alone should avoid unlit areas at night.
