Osaka Travel Facts

Osaka is Japan's third-largest city and the commercial heart of the Kansai region. Where Tokyo runs cool and ordered, Osaka is louder, friendlier, and famously food-obsessed - locals are said to spend more on eating out per capita than anywhere else in the country.

The neon-lit canals of Dotonbori, the towering keep of Osaka Castle, the kitchenware shops of Doguyasuji, and the boundary-pushing nightlife of Namba make for an easy multi-day stay. Osaka also works as a base for day trips: Kyoto and Nara are 30-45 minutes away by train, and the city's two airports make it a natural arrival or departure point for Kansai.
