Riga is Latvia's Art Nouveau capital and the largest city in the Baltics — a Hanseatic port turned architectural showcase where UNESCO-listed old town lanes lead to Europe's finest Jugendstil quarter, then out to gritty warehouse districts turned market halls and craft breweries. The pastel gabled facades of Livu Square, the House of the Black Heads, and Riga Cathedral define the medieval heart.
Away from the old town, Alberta iela is a two-block open-air museum of Mikhail Eisenstein's Art Nouveau. The Riga Central Market fills five old zeppelin hangars with cheese, smoked fish, and berries, and beach town Jurmala is 30 minutes away by train. Riga's location makes it a natural hub for Baltic tours.

June to August is Riga's warmest window, ideal for terraces, Jurmala beach trips, and Ligo (midsummer) celebrations. December's Christmas market at Dome Square is a strong winter draw, while May and September offer lower prices and mild weather.
Bus 22 runs from Riga International Airport (RIX) to Central Station in about 25-30 minutes for 2 EUR (buy from the driver or at kiosks). The airBaltic Express minibus is quicker; Bolt or a licensed taxi to the centre costs 10-15 EUR.
Central Riga is small enough to walk, with the old town, Art Nouveau district, and Central Market all connected on foot in 30 minutes. Trams, trolleys, and buses run by Rigas Satiksme cover longer trips; Bolt is widely available for evenings.
Two days is plenty for Riga's old town, Art Nouveau district, and Central Market. Add a third day for a Jurmala beach trip (30 min by train), Sigulda castles and Gauja National Park (1h), or a Rundale Palace day out (1.5h).
Riga is generally very safe for tourists during the day. At night, avoid the small handful of aggressive tourist-trap bars in the old town (some scams around Skarnu iela and Kalku iela), stick to reputable venues, and use Bolt or licensed taxis instead of unofficial ones.
