Budva is the heart of the Montenegrin coast, a walled medieval town fringed by sandy beaches and a string of resorts along the Budva Riviera on the Adriatic. One of the oldest settlements on the eastern Adriatic, it pairs a compact stone old town with a modern marina, lively nightlife, and some of the busiest beaches in the country.
The Venetian-era Stari Grad is a cluster of churches, ramparts, and narrow lanes jutting out on a small peninsula, while beaches like Mogren and Slovenska Plaža sit close by. The famous islet resort of Sveti Stefan, the bay of Kotor, and the beaches of the wider Riviera are all a short drive along the coast.

The nearest airport is Tivat (TIV), about 20 km northwest of Budva, with taxis and transfers reaching the town in around 25 to 30 minutes. Podgorica Airport (TGD), Montenegro's largest, is roughly 65 km away, about a 1 hour 15 minute drive. Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia is another option to the north, around 70 km away, though it involves a border crossing that can be slow in summer.
Budva's old town and main beaches are compact and easily explored on foot. For the wider Budva Riviera, frequent local buses and inexpensive taxis connect resorts like Bečići, Rafailovići, and Sveti Stefan along the coast. A car gives freedom to explore Kotor Bay, Cetinje, and the mountains, but parking in central Budva is limited and busy in summer, and the old town itself is pedestrian-only.
Two to three days suits Budva well. That gives time to wander the Venetian old town, relax on the Riviera's beaches, admire the iconic island of Sveti Stefan, and sample the nightlife Budva is known for. With more time, the town is an excellent base for day trips to the stunning Bay of Kotor, the old royal capital of Cetinje, and Lovćen and Skadar Lake national parks.
Budva is a safe destination for tourists, and most visits are trouble-free. The main concerns are seasonal: petty theft in crowded beach and nightlife areas, occasional overcharging in tourist spots, and rowdy behaviour late at night in the party zones during summer. Keep valuables secure, agree taxi fares in advance, and normal precautions are generally all that is needed.
