Colombo Travel Facts
Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and the arrival point for almost every visitor to the island. It is a working port city rather than a resort, layered with Portuguese, Dutch and British architecture and now a rising skyline of towers along the reclaimed Port City waterfront.
The Fort district holds the colonial banks and the restored Dutch Hospital, now a courtyard of restaurants. Pettah beyond it is a dense grid of market streets and the red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. Galle Face Green fills every evening with kite-flyers and food carts, and Gangaramaya Temple sits beside Beira Lake in the centre.
Many travellers give Colombo a day at either end of a trip, which is about right. Trains south along the coast to Galle run beside the beach, and the hill-country line to Kandy and Ella starts from Colombo Fort station.

Colombo Destination FAQ
December to March is the driest and most comfortable period in Colombo. The southwest monsoon brings the heaviest rain between May and September. Temperatures barely move all year, sitting between 26°C and 32°C.
Take a taxi via the E03 expressway, which reaches central Colombo in about 45 minutes. Book through the official airport taxi counter or the PickMe app to avoid overcharging. An express bus also runs to the Fort area for a fraction of the price.
Use the PickMe app for metered tuk-tuks and cars, which removes the fare negotiation entirely. Walking is possible in Fort and along Galle Face but uncomfortable in midday heat. Coastal trains from Fort station are a scenic way to head south.
One to two days is enough for Colombo. Most travellers use it as an arrival or departure base rather than a destination in itself. A single full day covers Fort, Pettah, Gangaramaya and an evening at Galle Face Green.
Galle is the standout, about two hours south by expressway or a slower coastal train. Negombo's beaches and fish market are 40 minutes north and handy for early flights. Kandy is roughly three hours inland and better as an overnight than a day trip.
Colombo is safe for visitors, with tourist-targeted scams the most common annoyance. Watch for strangers who strike up a conversation and steer you towards a gem shop or a "special festival" — politely decline and move on. Traffic is the more practical hazard.
