The Edinburgh Christmas market opens on Saturday 14 November 2026 and runs until Sunday 3 January 2027 in East Princes Street Gardens, in the valley below Edinburgh Castle. The stalls usually trade from 10am to 10pm, with shorter hours on some holiday dates and a full closure on Christmas Day. Entry to the market is free, while rides and the ice rink are ticketed.
This guide covers the 8 best things to do around the Edinburgh Christmas market, from the main stalls and the LNER Big Wheel to the funfair, the George Street ice rink, the castle light show and Hogmanay. Each entry has the exact address, the nearest tram stop or station and a Pro Tip. The official festival, Edinburgh's Christmas, is run by Unique Assembly on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council and spreads across three main sites.
The list follows a route from east to west. Start at the market by Waverley Station, step into the Scottish National Gallery on the Mound, cross into West Princes Street Gardens for the funfair, then head up to George Street for the ice rink. Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Botanic Garden host ticketed evening events, and Hogmanay closes the season from 29 December.

1Edinburgh Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens - The Main Market

The main Edinburgh Christmas market fills East Princes Street Gardens, beneath the Gothic spire of the Scott Monument and facing the Old Town skyline across the valley. Around 70 wooden chalets sell handmade gifts from Scottish and European crafters, decorations, mulled wine, hot chocolate and street food. The stalls sit on either side of the railway line that runs through the gardens, with more stalls by the galleries on the Mound.
The 2026 season runs from 14 November to 3 January 2027, with the market open from 10am to 10pm on most days. It is free to enter, and it is closed on Christmas Day.
Previous editions built a large deck over the garden lawn, which drew criticism; the current layout keeps the stalls along the paths instead. The result is narrower walkways, so crowds build quickly after 4pm.
2LNER Big Wheel and Star Flyer - The Best Views Over the Market

The LNER Big Wheel is the most visible part of the Edinburgh Christmas market. At 46 metres, it is the largest Ferris wheel in Scotland, and from the top you look across the castle, the Old Town and the lit stalls below, out towards the Firth of Forth on a clear day.
Next to it, the Star Flyer swings riders on chairs around a tall tower above the gardens for a faster, colder view of the city. Both rides are ticketed separately from the free market, with prices from around £12 per ride. More than 300,000 people rode the wheel or the Star Flyer during the 2025 to 2026 season, according to the organiser.
The wheel is busiest in the early evening, when visitors want the city lights. Daytime rides have shorter queues and clearer views of the castle and Arthur's Seat.
3Festive Family Funfair in West Princes Street Gardens - Rides Below the Castle

West Princes Street Gardens hosts the Festive Family Funfair, the part of Edinburgh's Christmas aimed at younger visitors. The gardens are free to enter, and the rides are paid for individually: traditional fairground attractions such as carousels, waltzers and bumper cars, plus festive food and drink stalls.
The setting is dramatic, with Edinburgh Castle rising straight above the gardens on its volcanic rock. The Ross Fountain, a cast-iron fountain restored in recent years, stands at the western end, and the castle walls are floodlit after dark.
Access is by ramp from Princes Street or King's Stables Road, although some approaches are steep or cobbled. The funfair runs on the same dates as the market, 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

4Edinburgh's Christmas Ice Rink on George Street - Skating in the New Town

Edinburgh's Christmas Ice Rink sits on George Street, the grand Georgian street of the New Town, close to Castle Street. It is one of the three main sites of the official festival, along with the two halves of Princes Street Gardens, and the rink is lined with lights and decorations running down the street.
Skating is ticketed, with sessions throughout the day. The programme includes toddler sessions, relaxed sessions with smaller crowds, softer lighting and lower music, and an adults-only evening skate with party music. Next to the rink, a pop-up ice bar is kept at minus 10°C for a short, very cold drink.
George Street is also lined with bars and restaurants, so it is easy to warm up after a session. From the rink, it is a short walk back down to the Edinburgh Christmas market on Princes Street.
5Castle of Light at Edinburgh Castle - The Evening Light Show

Castle of Light is an evening light and sound show staged inside Edinburgh Castle during the winter. Visitors follow a trail through the castle grounds as projections and lighting transform the walls, the batteries and the historic buildings. The 2025 edition, called Fire and Ice, ran from 21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.
Dates for the 2026 show had not been confirmed at the time of writing. Tickets are sold separately from daytime castle entry and are timed, so it is worth booking as soon as the dates are announced.
The castle sits at the top of the Royal Mile, a 15-minute uphill walk from Waverley Station. It pairs well with an early evening at the Edinburgh Christmas market, since you look down on the lit gardens from the castle esplanade on the way in.
6Christmas at the Botanics - The Light Trail at the Royal Botanic Garden

Christmas at the Botanics turns the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh into an illuminated evening trail, with light installations threaded through the trees, glasshouses and lawns. It has become one of the most popular winter events in the city, away from the crowds of the Edinburgh Christmas market.
The trail is ticketed and timed, and it typically runs from late November until just before the New Year. The 2026 dates had not been published at the time of writing, so check the garden's website before planning around it.
The 28-hectare garden sits north of the New Town, near the village-like district of Stockbridge. By day, it is free to enter and offers one of the best views of the Edinburgh skyline, including the castle, from its higher lawns.
7Scottish National Gallery - Free Art Beside the Market

The Scottish National Gallery stands on the Mound, between East and West Princes Street Gardens, right next to the Edinburgh Christmas market. Admission to the permanent collection is free, which makes it the best warm, quiet break from the stalls in the city centre.
The collection covers European art from the Renaissance to the late 19th century, with works by Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet and Van Gogh, alongside the most important collection of Scottish painting in the world. Look out for The Skating Minister by Henry Raeburn, a fitting picture for the season.
Some Christmas market stalls stand beside the galleries on the Mound itself, so you can step straight from the chalets into the gallery. The café and shop are also useful on a wet day.
8Edinburgh's Hogmanay - The New Year Finale

Edinburgh's Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year festival, runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 and is separate from the Christmas market. The centrepiece is the Hogmanay Street Party on Princes Street on 31 December, with the Concert in the Gardens in West Princes Street Gardens and fireworks over the castle at midnight.
Tickets are required for the Street Party and, separately, for the concert. A Street Party ticket does not include entry to the main concert. Last year the concert was headlined by Texas, and the 2026 line-up is usually announced in the autumn.
The Edinburgh Christmas market stays open between Christmas and New Year, though with adjusted hours around 31 December. If you plan to visit for both, book accommodation very early, since hotels fill up months ahead.

The Edinburgh Christmas market runs from Saturday 14 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 in East Princes Street Gardens. It usually opens from 10am to 10pm, with shorter hours on some holiday dates. The market is closed on Christmas Day, so plan around 25 December.
Yes. Entry to the Edinburgh Christmas market in East Princes Street Gardens and to the funfair area in West Princes Street Gardens is free. You pay for food, drink and rides. The LNER Big Wheel and the Star Flyer cost from around £12 per ride, and the George Street ice rink is ticketed.
Most of them. In one day you can cover the market, the Big Wheel, the funfair, the Scottish National Gallery and the George Street ice rink, since they are all within a few minutes' walk. Castle of Light and Christmas at the Botanics are evening events with timed tickets, so plan them for separate evenings, and Hogmanay only runs from 29 December.
Book ahead for the George Street ice rink at weekends, Castle of Light, Christmas at the Botanics and Edinburgh's Hogmanay, all of which use timed or limited tickets. The Big Wheel and Star Flyer can usually be bought on the day, though queues are long in the early evening.
Mostly, with some limits. Accessible entrances to East Princes Street Gardens are on Princes Street, Waverley Bridge and Market Street, but temporary ramps can be steeper than standard. West Princes Street Gardens has ramp access from Princes Street and King's Stables Road, though some paths are steep or cobbled.
Consider a winter walk up Calton Hill or Arthur's Seat for views over the city, a Christmas concert at St Giles' Cathedral or the Usher Hall, and a walk through the narrow closes off the Royal Mile after dark. If you are staying into January, Hogmanay events continue until 1 January 2027.
