Da Nang Travel Facts
Da Nang sits midway down Vietnam's coast with 30 kilometres of beach on one side and the Marble Mountains and Truong Son range on the other. It has grown fast into the country's third city, with a riverfront of illuminated bridges and a beachfront of resorts, but it remains far less frantic than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
My Khe Beach runs the length of the eastern shore, the Dragon Bridge breathes fire on weekend nights, and the Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the world's best collection from the Champa kingdom. Up in the hills, the Ba Na Hills complex and its Golden Bridge — held up by two giant stone hands — draw a steady stream of visitors by cable car.
The location is the real draw. The lantern-lit old town of Hoi An is 30 minutes south, the imperial city of Hue is two hours north over the Hai Van Pass, and the caves of Phong Nha are within reach on a longer trip.

February to May is the best window in Da Nang, with warm dry days and calm seas. June to August is hotter but still good for the beach. Avoid September to November, the wettest months, when typhoons occasionally hit central Vietnam.
Take a taxi or a Grab, which reach the riverfront in about 10 minutes. Da Nang International is unusually close to the city, only 3 km from the centre. Hoi An is 45 minutes further south by car.
Use the Grab app for cars and motorbike taxis, which is cheap and removes any haggling. Renting a scooter is popular for the coast road and the Marble Mountains, but only if you are confident and properly licensed. Public buses exist but are limited.
Three to four days suits Da Nang and its surroundings. Allow one for the beach and the city, one for Ba Na Hills and the Marble Mountains, and one or two for Hoi An and the Hai Van Pass. Many travellers split their stay between Da Nang and Hoi An.
Hoi An is about 30 km south of Da Nang, roughly 40 minutes by car or Grab. Many people visit as a day trip, though the old town is at its best in the evening once the lanterns are lit. Buses and hotel shuttles also run the route.
Da Nang is one of the safest cities in Vietnam and is noticeably calmer than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Petty theft is uncommon and scams are rare. Traffic and scooter accidents are the genuine risk, especially for inexperienced riders.
