The best time to visit Zadar is from May to September, when Dalmatia is warm and the Adriatic is ideal for swimming. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, filling the old town and nearby beaches and islands, while June and September bring warm weather with fewer crowds. Spring and autumn are pleasant for sightseeing and island-hopping, and Zadar's famously beautiful sunsets are worth catching year-round.

Zadar Airport (ZAD) is about 10 km southeast of the city, with seasonal low-cost flights across Europe. The Liburnija shuttle bus meets flights and reaches the centre in around 25 minutes for about €4, while taxis take roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Split Airport, around 160 km south, is an alternative with more year-round connections, linked to Zadar by frequent buses along the coastal motorway.

Zadar's historic peninsula is compact and pedestrian-friendly, so you will explore the old town on foot among Roman ruins, churches, and marble streets. Liburnija city buses connect the centre with the bus station, suburbs, and beaches, with single tickets around €1.20. A car is handy for exploring the wider region and national parks, but not needed in the old town, and ferries from the harbour reach the nearby islands.

Two days is enough to enjoy Zadar itself, exploring the Roman Forum, St Donatus church, and the marble Kalelarga, and experiencing the modern Sea Organ and Sun Salutation installations by the waterfront at sunset. Zadar also makes an excellent base: day trips reach the Kornati islands, and the Krka and Plitvice Lakes national parks with their famous waterfalls are within reach by car or organised tour.

Zadar is a very safe city for tourists, with low crime and a relaxed atmosphere. Most visits are entirely trouble-free, and the main things to watch are petty theft in crowded areas in peak season and care on the smooth, sometimes slippery marble streets of the old town. Take normal precautions with valuables on beaches and in busy spots, and there is little else to worry about.

Zadar is famous for two modern landmarks on its waterfront: the Sea Organ, which turns the movement of the waves into haunting musical notes through pipes under the marble steps, and the adjacent Sun Salutation, a solar-powered light installation that glows at night.
