Most Berlin Christmas market sites open on Monday 23 November 2026, the day after Totensonntag, Germany's Sunday of remembrance, when markets traditionally stay closed. According to published 2026 listings, Gendarmenmarkt runs until 31 December, Rotes Rathaus and Breitscheidplatz until 3 January 2027, and Charlottenburg Palace until 27 December. Berlin has more than 80 Christmas markets in total, so choosing well matters.

This guide covers the 5 best Christmas markets in Berlin, from the elegant WeihnachtsZauber on the newly renovated Gendarmenmarkt to Rotes Rathaus, Alexanderplatz, Breitscheidplatz and the market in front of Charlottenburg Palace. Each entry has the 2026 dates where published, the address, the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn station and a Pro Tip.

The order runs from east to west. Gendarmenmarkt, Rotes Rathaus and Alexanderplatz sit close together in Mitte, while Breitscheidplatz and Charlottenburg Palace are in the west of the city.

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt - The Elegant Berlin Christmas Market

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt - The Elegant Berlin Christmas Market

The WeihnachtsZauber on Gendarmenmarkt is often called the most beautiful Berlin Christmas market, and in 2026 it returns to its original home on the newly renovated square. The white tents and stalls sit between the twin French and German Cathedrals and the Konzerthaus, all lit up after dark. Published listings give 2026 dates of 23 November to 31 December.

The stalls focus on high-quality crafts, with artisans often working at their stands, and the food and drink are a step up from most markets. Stage performances of choirs and music run throughout the season.

A small entry fee has been charged in recent years at certain times, which keeps the market less crowded than the free ones but still busy on weekend evenings.

Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday afternoon, when the square is calmer and entry is often cheaper or free. Return after dark to see the French and German Cathedrals lit above the white tents.

Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus - Old Berlin Charm

Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus - Old Berlin Charm

The Berliner Weihnachtszeit sets up in front of the Rotes Rathaus, Berlin's red-brick City Hall, with the TV Tower rising behind it. Styled after old Berlin in the early 1900s, it is one of the most family-friendly Christmas markets in Berlin, with a large Ferris wheel and an ice rink around the Neptune Fountain. Published listings give 2026 dates of 23 November to 3 January 2027.

The stalls sell gifts, crafts and plenty of food, from bratwurst to roasted almonds, and the Ferris wheel gives a view over the market and the Nikolaiviertel, the old quarter by the Spree.

It is loud and busy, especially on weekends, but the setting under the TV Tower is hard to beat.

Pro Tip: Ride the Ferris wheel just after dark for views of the lit TV Tower and City Hall. Walk afterwards through the Nikolaiviertel, Berlin's oldest quarter, which is a two-minute walk south.

Christmas Market at Alexanderplatz - The Central Square Market

Christmas Market at Alexanderplatz - The Central Square Market

The Christmas market on Alexanderplatz is one of the most central in Berlin, spreading across the square beside the World Clock and close to the TV Tower. It is a good stop when you arrive at Alexanderplatz station, one of the city's main transport hubs, and it links easily on foot with the Rotes Rathaus market.

The market has a lively, fairground feel, with rides, a large Christmas pyramid, and plenty of food and drink stalls serving grilled sausages, potato pancakes and Glühwein.

Exact 2026 dates had not been confirmed at the time of writing; in recent years the market has opened in late November and run into late December. Check the official listing before you go.

Pro Tip: Combine Alexanderplatz with the Rotes Rathaus market, five minutes away on foot. Look for the large Christmas pyramid, a traditional German decoration from the Ore Mountains region.

4
Christmas Market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church - Breitscheidplatz

Christmas Market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church - Breitscheidplatz

The Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz surrounds the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, whose ruined bell tower, damaged in the Second World War, has been preserved as a memorial. It is the main Berlin Christmas market in the west of the city, at the start of the Kurfürstendamm shopping boulevard. Published listings give 2026 dates of 23 November to 3 January 2027.

The market has more than 100 stalls selling gifts, crafts and international food, and its location makes it easy to combine with Christmas shopping on the Ku'damm and at the KaDeWe department store nearby.

A memorial on the square commemorates the victims of the 2016 attack, and security measures are in place around the market.

Pro Tip: Combine the market with a visit to the KaDeWe department store's food hall on Tauentzienstrasse, a five-minute walk away. Step inside the memorial church's modern chapel to see its blue glass walls glowing at night.

5
Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace - Baroque Palace Setting

Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace - Baroque Palace Setting

The Christmas market in front of Charlottenburg Palace, the largest surviving royal palace in Berlin, is one of the most romantic Christmas markets in Berlin. The stalls fill the forecourt of the Baroque palace, which is lit up in changing colours after dark. Published listings give 2026 dates of 23 November to 27 December.

The market is known for its crafts and food, and the setting feels grander and more spacious than the city-centre markets. The palace itself, built for Queen Sophie Charlotte at the end of the 17th century, can be visited during the day.

It is a little further out than the central markets, but well connected by bus and U-Bahn.

Pro Tip: Tour the palace interiors in the afternoon, then step out as the facade lights come on. The palace gardens are free to walk in and make a peaceful break from the stalls.
