Alicante Travel Facts

Alicante is a sunny port city on Spain's Costa Blanca, backed by the hilltop Santa Bárbara castle and fronted by palm-lined esplanades along the Mediterranean. A relaxed Valencian city with a long history as a trading port, it combines sandy urban beaches, a lively old quarter, and a mild climate that draws visitors year-round.

The marble-paved Explanada de España leads to the marina and the Postiguet beach, while the atmospheric Barrio de la Santa Cruz climbs toward the castle with its sweeping bay views. Beyond the city, the Costa Blanca resorts, the island of Tabarca, and the wine country of the interior are all within easy reach.

Alicante is affordable, walkable, and blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. Summers are hot and busy, but its mild winters make it a popular escape long after other Spanish beach towns quieten down.

Alicante Destination FAQ

The best time to visit Alicante is from April to October, thanks to its warm, dry Costa Blanca climate. July and August are hot and busy with beachgoers, while late spring and early autumn bring comfortable temperatures and warm seas with fewer crowds. The Bonfires of Saint John (Hogueras de San Juan) in late June are a spectacular local festival. Even winters are mild and sunny, making Alicante a year-round destination.

Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC) is only about 11 km southwest of the city. The C-6 airport bus runs frequently to the centre in around 20 to 25 minutes for about €3.85, and taxis take roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The airport is one of Spain's busiest, with good connections across Europe, making Alicante an easy gateway to the wider Costa Blanca.

Central Alicante is flat and walkable, with the Explanada promenade, the old town, and Postiguet beach all close together. Local TAM buses and the modern TRAM light rail cover the city and run up the coast to towns like El Campello, Villajoyosa, and Benidorm. A car is not needed for the city itself but can be handy for exploring inland villages and quieter Costa Blanca beaches.

Two to three days is ideal for Alicante. That allows time to climb to the Santa Bárbara castle for panoramic views, wander the colourful Santa Cruz old quarter, relax on Postiguet beach, and stroll the palm-lined Explanada. With extra days you can take the TRAM up the coast, visit the palm groves and historic sites of nearby Elche, or make a day trip to Tabarca island.

Alicante is a safe city for tourists, with a relaxed atmosphere and low levels of serious crime. As in any popular beach destination, watch out for pickpockets and bag-snatchers around the beaches, the Explanada, the market, and nightlife areas in summer. Keep an eye on your belongings on the sand and normal precautions are usually all that is needed.

A popular day trip from Alicante is the island of Tabarca, the smallest permanently inhabited island in Spain and a protected marine reserve. Boats depart from the port and take around an hour, delivering you to clear waters ideal for snorkelling, a small walled village, and seafood restaurants known for caldero rice stew. Book a return sailing and spend the day swimming and exploring the car-free island.
