Salt Lake City sits in a valley between the Wasatch and Oquirrh ranges, and its selling point is proximity: four world-class ski resorts, including Alta and Snowbird, are within 40 minutes of downtown, closer to a major airport than anywhere else in North America. The snow in Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons is famously dry and abundant.
The city was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and Temple Square remains its centre, though Salt Lake today is considerably more secular and diverse than its reputation suggests, with a lively bar and restaurant scene downtown and in Sugar House. Utah's once-notorious alcohol laws have relaxed substantially.
In summer the same canyons become hiking and mountain-biking country, and Salt Lake works as the gateway to Utah's Mighty Five national parks, with Arches and Canyonlands around four hours south. The Great Salt Lake itself has shrunk dramatically in recent years and is less of a visitor draw than the name implies.

It depends what you are here for. December to March is ski season, when the Cottonwood canyons get some of the deepest, driest snow in North America and the Sundance Film Festival fills Park City in January. September and October are the best months for hiking and the national parks, with warm days and cool nights. Summer is hot and dry in the valley but pleasant at altitude. Winter inversions can trap poor air quality in the valley for days.
The TRAX Green Line runs from a station at the airport to downtown in about 15 minutes for a low flat fare, with trains every 15 minutes. It is one of the quickest airport transfers of any US city, as SLC is just 6 km from the centre. Ski resort shuttles also collect directly from the airport, and several resorts are reachable in 40 minutes, which is why many skiers fly in and are on the slopes the same morning.
Four resorts sit in the Cottonwood canyons within 40 minutes of downtown: Alta and Snowbird in Little Cottonwood, known for deep powder, with Alta remaining skiers-only, and Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood. Park City and Deer Valley are 45 minutes east. The canyon roads close for avalanche control after heavy snowfall, sometimes for hours, so check UDOT before setting off and consider the ski bus rather than driving.
Much less than the reputation suggests. Bars and restaurants across Salt Lake City serve beer, wine and spirits normally, and the city has a solid craft brewery and cocktail scene. The quirks that remain: spirits and stronger beer are sold only in state liquor stores, which close on Sundays and holidays, supermarkets stock beer up to 5 percent ABV, and restaurants may require you to order food alongside a drink in some settings.
Salt Lake City is the usual gateway to the Mighty Five, but none are day trips. Arches and Canyonlands near Moab are around four hours southeast, Capitol Reef three and a half, and Bryce Canyon and Zion four to five hours south. A road trip of five to seven days covers them properly, and a rental car is essential. Antelope Island on the Great Salt Lake, with its bison herd, is a genuine day trip at under an hour.
