Charlotte travel facts

Charlotte is the second-largest banking centre in the United States after New York, and Uptown, confusingly the name for its downtown, reflects that with a compact cluster of towers, museums and stadiums. The Mint Museum, the Bechtler Modern and the Harvey B. Gantt Center all sit within a few blocks of each other.

NASCAR is the other identity. The sport's headquarters and most of its teams are based here, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is in Uptown, and Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts the Coca-Cola 600. The US National Whitewater Center, meanwhile, is an artificial river complex for rafting, kayaking and climbing on the city's western edge.

The neighbourhoods are where Charlotte gets interesting. NoDa is the arts district with breweries and live music, South End has been transformed by the LYNX light rail and the Rail Trail, and Plaza Midwood is the older, scruffier bar quarter. The Blue Ridge Mountains are two hours west and the Atlantic beaches three hours east.

Charlotte Destination FAQ

September to November is the most reliable stretch, warm and dry with good colour in the surrounding Piedmont. Spring is lovely too, with dogwoods and azaleas from late March, though pollen counts are notoriously high. Summer is hot, humid and prone to afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is mild by American standards, with the occasional ice storm causing more disruption than snow ever does.

Charlotte Douglas is 11 km west of Uptown, so a taxi or rideshare takes 15 to 20 minutes. The CATS Sprinter bus runs a limited-stop service to Uptown in around 25 minutes for a low flat fare, roughly every 20 minutes. CLT is a major American Airlines hub, so many visitors only ever see it as a connection, but the city is an easy add-on from the airport.

Uptown, which is confusingly the downtown core, holds the museums, stadiums and most hotels. South End, just down the LYNX Blue Line, has been transformed into the brewery, restaurant and Rail Trail district and is where many visitors now prefer to stay. NoDa, short for North Davidson, is the arts quarter with murals, live music and independent bars. Plaza Midwood is older and scruffier in a good way, and Dilworth and Myers Park are the leafy historic residential areas.

Not at all, though the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown is well designed enough to interest people with no prior investment in the sport. Charlotte's other draws are independent of it: the Mint Museum and Bechtler Modern, the Billy Graham Library, the US National Whitewater Center for rafting and climbing, the Freedom Park greenway, and a strong brewery scene concentrated in South End and NoDa.
