Carmel is a city in Hamilton County, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis. Once a quiet farming town, it has grown into one of the most liveable small cities in the American Midwest, known for its walkable Arts & Design District, its European-inspired civic centre and more roundabouts than almost any other city in the United States.
The heart of the city is Carmel City Center and Carter Green, home to the Palladium, a domed concert hall at the Center for the Performing Arts. The Monon Trail, a former railway line turned walking and cycling path, runs straight through town and links Carmel with Indianapolis. Main Street and the Arts & Design District are lined with galleries, independent shops and restaurants.
Carmel is best known to visitors for the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, a German-style Christmas market held on Carter Green every winter since 2017. It is an easy base for exploring central Indiana, with downtown Indianapolis about 30 minutes away by car.

Carmel is known for having more roundabouts than almost any other US city, which keeps traffic moving smoothly.
One or two days is enough to see Carmel itself. That gives you time for the Arts & Design District, a show at the Palladium and a walk or ride along the Monon Trail. Add an extra day to explore downtown Indianapolis, about 30 minutes south by car.
