Denver sits at exactly one mile above sea level, hence the Mile High City, on the plains where they meet the Front Range of the Rockies. The mountains are the reason most people come, with a dozen ski resorts and Rocky Mountain National Park inside a two-hour drive, but the city itself has grown into a serious destination in its own right.
Downtown centres on the pedestrianised 16th Street Mall and Union Station, a beautifully restored 1914 terminal that now works as much as a bar and restaurant hall as a transport hub. RiNo, the River North Art District, is the mural-covered brewery and gallery quarter, LoHi has the best skyline views and restaurants, and the Golden Triangle holds the Denver Art Museum and the Clyfford Still.
Denver claims more breweries per capita than almost any US city, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre, cut into sandstone monoliths 25 minutes west, is widely regarded as the finest outdoor concert venue in the world. The altitude is real: alcohol hits harder and dehydration comes faster than most visitors expect.

September and early October are the best all-round months, with warm days, cool nights and aspens turning gold in the mountains. Summer is reliably sunny and busy, ideal for hiking and Red Rocks concerts, though afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winter is the reason many people come, with ski resorts an hour or two west, and Denver itself stays surprisingly sunny. Spring is the least predictable season, with the heaviest snowfalls often arriving in March.
Take the RTD A Line commuter rail, which runs from Denver International directly to Union Station downtown in about 37 minutes for a flat fare, every 15 to 30 minutes. It is considerably cheaper than a taxi or rideshare, which take 30 to 45 minutes and cost several times more depending on traffic. The airport is unusually far out at 40 km, so the train is the sensible default.
Denver's 1,609 metres affects most visitors mildly and the ski resorts, at 2,500 to 3,500 metres, affect them considerably more. Drink far more water than usual, go easy on alcohol for the first day or two since it hits noticeably harder, and use sunscreen because UV is around 25 percent stronger than at sea level. If you are heading straight to the mountains, spending a night in Denver first helps your body adjust.
Red Rocks is about 25 minutes west of downtown near Morrison, and there is no regular public transport, so drive, use a rideshare or take one of the shuttle buses that run from downtown bars on concert nights. Parking fills hours before big shows and the walk from the outer lots is steep at altitude. On non-concert days the park is free to enter and open for hiking and the stair workouts locals use it for.
Yes, easily. Rocky Mountain National Park is around 90 minutes northwest via Estes Park, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the US, is open roughly late May to October. Timed-entry reservations are required in peak months, so book ahead. Closer options include Golden, Idaho Springs hot springs and Mount Blue Sky. A car is effectively necessary, and mountain weather can change fast in any season.
Two days covers the city itself: Union Station and LoDo, the Denver Art Museum, RiNo's murals and breweries, and an evening at Red Rocks if something is on. Add two or three more if you want the mountains, whether that means Rocky Mountain National Park, a ski trip or the hot springs towns. Most visitors treat Denver as one or two nights either side of a mountain stay rather than the whole trip.
