San Antonio travel facts
San Antonio is the most visibly Spanish and Mexican of the big Texas cities, founded in 1718 and still shaped by it. The Alamo sits in the middle of downtown, but the four less-visited missions strung south along the river, together with the Alamo forming a UNESCO World Heritage site, are arguably more rewarding and far quieter.
The River Walk is the city's other defining feature, a network of pedestrian paths a level below the streets running beside the San Antonio River, lined with restaurants and reached by stairways from downtown. It continues north to the Pearl District, a former brewery turned into the city's best food and market quarter, and south along the Mission Reach to the missions themselves.
San Antonio is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and Tex-Mex here means puffy tacos and barbacoa rather than the export version. It is also considerably cheaper than Austin, 130 km north, and makes an easy base for Hill Country day trips.

March to May is the best season, warm and comfortable, with Fiesta San Antonio filling ten days in April with parades and street food. October and November are nearly as good and less crowded. Summer is hot and humid, frequently above 35°C, though the River Walk stays shaded and the water parks do good business. December is atmospheric, with the River Walk lit by thousands of lights.
San Antonio International is only 13 km north of downtown, so a taxi or rideshare takes 15 to 20 minutes. VIA bus route 5 runs to downtown for a couple of dollars and takes around 40 minutes. Many downtown hotels also run shuttles. The airport is small and easy to navigate, so transfers are rarely a source of stress here.
It is worth seeing, though many visitors are surprised by how small it is: what survives is essentially the chapel and the Long Barrack, surrounded by modern downtown rather than open ground. Entry is free but timed tickets should be reserved online. The site is treated as a shrine, so hats off and quiet inside. If you want more substance, pair it with the four other missions along the Mission Trail, which are larger, still active as parishes and far less crowded.
The four southern missions, Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada, form San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and are all free to enter. The best way to see them is the Mission Reach, a 13 km paved hike-and-bike trail along the river connecting them, which works well by rental bike over half a day. Driving between them takes about two hours in total. San José is the largest and has the main visitor centre.
Two to three days is right. One day covers downtown, the Alamo and the River Walk, plus dinner at the Pearl. A second handles the Mission Trail and the McNay or Witte museums. A third suits a Hill Country day trip to Fredericksburg or the caves at Natural Bridge, or a theme park day at SeaWorld or Six Flags. San Antonio also pairs naturally with Austin, 130 km north.
