China spans everything from the Great Wall and the Forbidden City to the neon waterfront of Shanghai and the karst rivers of Guangxi. It is a country best travelled by high-speed rail, which links Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou in a few hours each. Regional cuisines vary enormously — fiery Sichuan, delicate Cantonese dim sum, hand-pulled noodles in the northwest — and visa rules have loosened considerably, with visa-free entry now open to a growing list of nationalities.
