Galway sits where the River Corrib meets the Atlantic on Ireland's west coast, and it has a reputation for music and atmosphere that outstrips its size. The Latin Quarter's painted shopfronts and pub sessions run most nights of the week, and buskers occupy Shop Street year-round.
The city itself is compact — the Spanish Arch, Galway Cathedral and the seaside promenade at Salthill are all within a walk of each other. What draws most visitors, though, is what lies beyond: the Cliffs of Moher and the limestone plateau of the Burren to the south, Connemara's bogs and mountains to the northwest, and the Irish-speaking Aran Islands out in the bay.
Summer brings a dense festival calendar including the Galway International Arts Festival and the Races, when accommodation fills months ahead. The weather is famously changeable in any season, so waterproofs matter more than a forecast.

May, June and September offer the best balance in Galway — long days, reasonable weather and manageable crowds. July brings the Arts Festival and the Races, which are excellent but fill every bed in the city. Winter is dark and wet, though the pub sessions run regardless.
Direct coaches run from both Dublin and Shannon airports to Galway city centre. From Shannon the journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes; from Dublin it is roughly 2 hours 30 minutes with services every hour. Trains from Dublin Heuston are a comfortable alternative at around 2 hours 20.
Not for the city, which is entirely walkable. A car is genuinely useful for Connemara and the Burren, where public transport is limited and the scenery is the point. Organised day tours are the alternative if you would rather not drive on narrow rural roads.
Three days works well. One for the city and Salthill, one for the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, and one for Connemara or the Aran Islands. Two days is enough if you only want the city and a single excursion.
Ferries leave from Rossaveal, about 40 minutes west of Galway by connecting shuttle bus, and take around 40 minutes to Inis Mór. Flights from Connemara Airport take under 10 minutes. Day trips are possible, but staying overnight on Inis Mór or Inis Oírr is a very different experience.
Galway is a friendly and very safe city. Late-night rowdiness around the pubs is about as serious as it gets, and violent crime is rare. Coastal walks and cliff edges deserve real caution in high wind.
