The biggest Gothenburg Christmas market fills the Liseberg amusement park, where Christmas at Liseberg runs on selected dates from 14 November to 30 December 2026, according to market listings. Unlike most Christmas markets, Liseberg charges an entrance fee, but it offers more than 80 stalls, an ice rink, a medieval camp and millions of lights, and draws around 500,000 visitors a season.
Gothenburg, Sweden's second city, calls itself a Christmas city, and its festive season also includes a neighbourhood market in the cobbled streets of Haga, a historic market at Kronhuset and a fair at Tjolöholm Castle. This guide covers the 5 best ways to enjoy a Gothenburg Christmas market trip, each with the address, the nearest tram or bus stop and a Pro Tip. Where 2026 details had not been announced, we give last year's information.
The order starts at Liseberg, walks along the Avenyn to the city centre, visits Kronhuset and Haga, and finishes with an excursion to Tjolöholm Castle.

1Christmas at Liseberg - Sweden's Biggest Christmas Market

Liseberg, Scandinavia's largest amusement park, transforms into a Christmas wonderland every winter, with millions of lights, open fires and more than 80 rustic stalls selling crafts and Swedish delicacies. It is one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in Sweden, drawing around 500,000 visitors a season.
The park has an ice rink, a medieval camp, Christmas shows and some of its rides, and children can meet the Liseberg rabbits, the park's mascots. The 2026 season runs on selected dates from 14 November to 30 December, according to listings, and entry is ticketed.
Check Liseberg's website for the 2026 calendar, opening hours and ticket prices, as the park is not open every day.
2Haga Christmas Market - Cobbled Lanes and Cinnamon Buns

Haga, Gothenburg's oldest suburb, is a picturesque neighbourhood of 19th-century wooden and stone houses, cobbled streets and cafés. On Advent weekends, its main street, Haga Nygata, hosts a cosy Christmas market with stalls selling handicrafts, decorations and seasonal treats.
The market has a local, traditional atmosphere, with brass bands and carol singers adding to the festive mood. Listings give dates of weekends from 21 November to 14 December 2026. It is the most traditional Gothenburg Christmas market and is free to visit.
Haga is famous for its giant cinnamon buns (kanelbullar), sold at historic cafés along Haga Nygata, making it a perfect place for fika, the Swedish coffee break.
3Kronhuset Christmas Market - In the City's Oldest Building

Kronhuset, a 17th-century brick building in the old town, is one of the oldest buildings in Gothenburg. It and the surrounding craft workshops, Kronhusbodarna, host a traditional Christmas market in early December, with artisans selling glass, ceramics, textiles and sweets.
The setting, with its courtyard and historic buildings, gives the market an old-fashioned atmosphere. The market is held over a few days, so check the dates for 2026 before you go. It is free to enter and makes a charming, smaller Gothenburg Christmas market experience.
The Kronhusbodarna workshops are open year-round, and visitors can watch glassblowers and other craftspeople at work.

4Avenyn and the City Christmas Lights

Kungsportsavenyen, known as Avenyn, is Gothenburg's grand boulevard, running from Götaplatsen and the Poseidon statue to the old town canal. During Advent, the boulevard and the surrounding streets are decorated with Christmas lights, creating a festive walk between Liseberg and the city centre.
Along the way, shops, restaurants and bars offer Christmas menus, including the julbord, the traditional Swedish Christmas buffet with herring, meatballs, ham and rice pudding. Many restaurants serve julbord from late November, and it is a highlight of any Gothenburg Christmas market trip.
The lights stretch into the old town and the shopping streets around Nordstan, making the city centre atmospheric after dark.
5Tjolöholm Castle Christmas Market - A Day Trip to an English-Style Castle

Tjolöholm Castle, an English-style manor house completed in the early 1900s on the coast south of Gothenburg, hosts one of the most popular Christmas markets in western Sweden. Stalls fill the castle grounds with crafts, food and decorations, and the castle itself is decorated for Christmas.
The market takes place on selected days, with listings giving dates from 20 November to 6 December 2026. Entry is ticketed, and food and drink stalls are spread across the grounds.
The castle's setting by the sea and its Arts and Crafts interiors make it a memorable excursion, especially on a crisp winter day.
