Bansko is a town of roughly 8,900 people in Blagoevgrad Province, southwestern Bulgaria, sitting at 925 metres at the northeastern foot of the Pirin Mountains. The old quarter keeps its stone-walled merchant houses and mehana taverns from the town's days as a trading and stockbreeding centre. The newer half of Bansko grew up after 2000 around the ski gondola and the hotels that followed it.
The ski area is Bulgaria's largest and most modern. An eight-seat gondola over 6 kilometres long climbs from the edge of town to Bunderishka Polyana at about 1,600 metres, and the pistes reach roughly 2,600 metres below Todorka peak. Snow cover is usually dependable from mid-December into April. Above the resort, Pirin National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, with Vihren at 2,914 metres as its highest summit and glacial lakes across the massif.
Sofia lies about 160 kilometres north, a drive of roughly two and a half hours, and Sofia Airport (SOF) is the usual arrival point. Bansko also sits on the Septemvri-Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway, which is a scenic ride rather than a practical transfer. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so prices are now quoted in euros. Bansko remains one of the cheaper ski towns in Europe, and it has built a second identity as a digital-nomad base outside the winter season.
