Prague Christmas Markets 2026: Where Winter Feels Like Magic
By Viktorija Dvariskyte · Marketing Manager

The main Prague Christmas market on Old Town Square opens on 28 November 2026 and stays open until 6 January 2027, according to the official Czech tourism board. Wenceslas Square follows the same dates. The neighbourhood markets start earlier: Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) opens on 20 November, Republic Square on 25 November and Tyl's Square on 26 November, and all three close on Christmas Eve.
This guide covers the 8 best places to experience a Prague Christmas market, from the giant tree in front of the Týn Church to the smaller squares where locals actually do their shopping. Each entry includes the 2026 dates where they have been published, the exact address, the nearest metro or tram stop and a Pro Tip. Entry to every market on this list is free.
The order follows a route through the city. Old Town Square, the Old Town Hall Tower and Charles Bridge sit together in Staré Město. Wenceslas Square and Republic Square are a short walk east in Nové Město. Náměstí Míru and Tyl's Square are in the residential districts of Vinohrady and Nusle, one or two metro stops away, while Prague Castle sits across the river in Hradčany.

1Old Town Square Christmas Market - The Classic Prague Christmas Market

Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) hosts the largest and best-known Prague Christmas market, and the setting is the reason. The wooden stalls fill the square between the twin Gothic spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the baroque Church of St Nicholas and the Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock. A tall Christmas tree covered in lights stands at the centre, and a stage hosts carols and folk music through Advent.
The 2026 market runs from 28 November to 6 January 2027, so it stays open over Christmas and New Year. The stalls sell glass ornaments, wooden toys, puppets and ceramics, alongside food: grilled sausages, ham roasted on a spit (Pražská šunka), potato pancakes and trdelník, the sugar-coated chimney cake.
Prices here are the highest of any Christmas market in Prague, and the ham in particular is sold by weight, so check the price per 100 g before ordering.
2Old Town Hall Tower - The View Over the Old Town Square Market

The Old Town Hall Tower rises about 70 metres above the Old Town Square Christmas market and gives the best overview of the stalls, the tree and the spires of the Týn Church. A lift takes you most of the way up, which makes it far easier than most church towers, and the gallery runs right round the top.
Below the tower is the Prague Astronomical Clock (Pražský orloj), first installed in 1410 and one of the oldest working astronomical clocks in the world. Every hour from 9am to 11pm, the figures of the twelve apostles appear in the windows above the dial, drawing a crowd that fills the square in front.
Seeing the market from above makes it easier to plan a route through the stalls, and the view at dusk, as the tree lights come on, is one of the best of the Prague Christmas season.
3Wenceslas Square Christmas Market - Stalls Along the Boulevard

Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) is less a square than a long boulevard, and its Christmas market runs in a line of stalls down the pedestrian centre. It is the second big Prague Christmas market, with the same 2026 dates as Old Town Square: 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
The stalls sell much the same mix as Old Town Square, with ornaments, crafts and plenty of food and drink: svařák (Czech mulled wine), medovina (hot mead), sausages and trdelník. The setting is busier and more commercial, lined with shops and hotels, but the view up the boulevard to the National Museum and the statue of St Wenceslas is a good one.
Because it is spread out, it rarely feels as packed as Old Town Square, and it makes an easy stop on the walk between the Old Town and Náměstí Míru.

4Náměstí Míru Christmas Market - The Neighbourhood Favourite in Vinohrady

The Christmas market on Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) sets up in front of the neo-Gothic Basilica of St Ludmila, in the residential district of Vinohrady. It is the Prague Christmas market many residents prefer, with fewer tour groups, lower prices and a more local crowd. In 2026 it opens on 20 November, making it one of the first in the city, and runs until 24 December.
The stalls lean towards handmade gifts and seasonal food: honey, Christmas biscuits, wooden toys, candles and knitted goods, along with mulled wine and punch. The twin spires of the basilica and the lit facade of the Vinohrady Theatre frame the square after dark.
It is one metro stop from Muzeum at the top of Wenceslas Square, so it fits easily into an afternoon in the centre.
5Republic Square Christmas Market - By the Municipal House

Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky) hosts a compact Christmas market next to two of Prague's most striking buildings: the Art Nouveau Municipal House (Obecní dům), with its mosaic-covered facade, and the Gothic Powder Tower, one of the original gates of the Old Town. The 2026 market runs from 25 November to 24 December.
This Prague Christmas market is smaller and calmer than Old Town Square, with stalls selling food, drinks and gifts. Because it sits at the start of the Royal Route, the historic coronation path that runs through the Old Town to Charles Bridge and Prague Castle, it makes a natural starting point for a walk through the centre.
The Municipal House itself has a café and restaurant under chandeliers that are worth a look, and the building often hosts Christmas concerts in Smetana Hall.
6Prague Castle Christmas Market - Stalls in the Castle Courtyard

Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle complex in the world, hosts a small Christmas market in its courtyards during Advent, usually near St Vitus Cathedral and St George's Square. The dates for 2026 had not been officially published at the time of writing; in recent years it has opened in late November and closed on Christmas Eve.
The market is modest in size compared with Old Town Square, but the setting is grand, with the Gothic towers of St Vitus Cathedral rising above the stalls. It works best combined with a visit to the castle itself, including the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and the Golden Lane.
Arriving by tram 22 at the Pražský hrad stop avoids the steep climb up from Malá Strana, and walking back down through the Castle Steps gives a wide view over the lit city at dusk.
7Charles Bridge at Dusk - The Festive Walk Across the Vltava

Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is not a market, but a walk across it is part of any Christmas visit to Prague. The 14th-century stone bridge, lined with 30 baroque statues, links the Old Town to Malá Strana and is the classic route between the Old Town Square Christmas market and Prague Castle.
In December the light fades early, and the bridge at dusk, with the castle lit above the river and the street lamps coming on, is one of the most atmospheric sights in the city. Musicians and artists set up along the parapets during the day.
The bridge is crowded from mid-morning to evening, but in winter the crowds thin earlier than in summer. The Old Town Bridge Tower at the eastern end can be climbed for a view along the bridge towards the castle.
8Tyl's Square Christmas Market - A Small Market in Nusle

Tyl's Square (Tylovo náměstí) is a small neighbourhood square close to I. P. Pavlova metro station, and its Christmas market is one of the most local in Prague. The 2026 market runs from 26 November to 24 December, according to the official tourism listing.
The scale is modest, with a few dozen stalls selling food, drinks, decorations and gifts, but prices are lower than in the centre and the crowd is mostly residents. It is a good place to try Czech Christmas food without tourist pricing.
Tyl's Square sits a short walk from Náměstí Míru, so the two markets combine easily in a single evening. Walk along Jugoslávská or Rumunská street between them to see the residential streets of Vinohrady with their Art Nouveau apartment blocks.

You pay for food, drinks and gifts: expect roughly 80 to 120 CZK (about €3 to €5) for a cup of svařák mulled wine, with higher prices on Old Town Square than in the neighbourhood markets. Prague ham is sold by weight, so check the price per 100 g before ordering.
Old Town Square, Republic Square, Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge are all within a 15-minute walk of each other. For the other markets, take metro line A to Náměstí Míru, line C to I. P. Pavlova for Tyl's Square, or tram 22 or 23 to Pražský hrad for Prague Castle. Public transport tickets are time-based and valid across the metro, trams and buses, and 24-hour and 72-hour passes are available.

The neighbourhood markets at Náměstí Míru, Republic Square and Tyl's Square close on 24 December. Holiday opening hours for 2026 had not been published at the time of writing, so expect shorter hours on Christmas Eve.
Yes, but only the two main markets. Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square stay open until 6 January 2027, through Christmas and New Year. Náměstí Míru, Republic Square and Tyl's Square close on Christmas Eve, so visit them before 24 December if they are on your list.
The two main markets are on Old Town Square, by the Astronomical Clock and the Týn Church, and on Wenceslas Square, the long boulevard in the New Town. Republic Square has a smaller market next to the Municipal House, Náměstí Míru's market stands in front of the Basilica of St Ludmila in Vinohrady, and Tyl's Square is near I. P. Pavlova metro station. Prague Castle also hosts a small market in its courtyards.
Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest, as Old Town Square gets packed in the evenings and at weekends. Come at dusk to see the lights come on, ideally from the Old Town Hall Tower. To see every market, visit between 28 November and 24 December, when both the main and the neighbourhood markets are open.
Old Town Square is the most famous and the most atmospheric, but also the busiest and most expensive. Náměstí Míru is the favourite of many locals for its prices and neighbourhood feel. Republic Square is best for combining a market with Art Nouveau architecture, and Prague Castle has the grandest setting.
The Old Town Square tree is traditionally lit on the market's opening day, which in 2026 is Saturday 28 November. In 2025 the ceremony took place at 4pm on the opening Saturday. The exact 2026 time had not been confirmed at the time of writing, so arrive early, as the square fills up well before the lights come on.
On the evening of 5 December, Czechs celebrate St Nicholas Eve (Mikuláš). People dressed as St Nicholas, an angel and a devil walk through the streets and squares, including Old Town Square, asking children whether they have been good this year. Good children get sweets or small gifts, while naughty ones are traditionally threatened with coal or potatoes.
